Obituary

Theodora Irene McNett, longtime Platteville resident, known affectionately as Teddy, age 85, died on March 30, 2015. Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Rev. Brenda Whitford will officiate. The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

She was born on May 28, 1929, the daughter of Elmer McNett and Berenice Scharfenstein McNett. She graduated from Platteville High School and what is now known as University of Wisconsin – Platteville with Bachelors and Masters Degrees.
She taught English in New Berlin, and Janesville. Teddy served as the head of the English Department in the newly opened Franklin Junior High School in Janesville and taught there until her retirement in 1993.
She was a loyal Pioneer fan and remained a steadfast Bo Ryan fan following him to UW-Madison after his stint as coach of the Pioneers. She was a lifelong advocate of reading, something she enjoyed immensely.
Teddy was an active member of the Platteville United Methodist Church. She was frequently seen around town at the Post Office and the library where she made almost daily trips. She was proud of her Southwestern Wisconsin heritage and liked to just “go for a ride” to view the scenery and check out places where some of her ancestors' lived. Teddy is survived by two nephews, John McNett of Kansas City, James (Annette Perkins) of Platteville, a niece Amanda McNett, of Dayton, OH, and a sister-in-law, Judith McNett, of Dayton, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and John. The family suggests memorials to University of Wisconsin – Platteville or to the United Methodist Church.

My heart is filled with sadness to learn of Teddy's passing. She lived just three doors down from us. Teddy often joined me when I was walking to work and she always stopped to chat with us when we were outside. We'll be taking over hosting the Homecoming Tent this fall as we just purchased the house next to us. We'll have to have the foundation do something special for this Homecoming in Teddy's honor. My sympathies to the family - and to her "extended family" here in Platteville as many of us thought of her as family. I know I did.

I am so very sorry to hear about cousin Teddy. I always enjoyed my time with her and am so very sorry that I have not been back to see her in such a long time. I always enjoyed her "chatty" Christmas letters and was very surprised to only get a card from her this year. I heartfelt sorrow to all of you. With love, Barbara

I knew Miss McNett as a teacher at Franklin in the 70's. She was a kind, very smart woman. She and I have something in common the love of reading. I love going to the library also. May God be with you in this time of sorrow. She was a great lady to all that knew her. Patty Ellefson

Miss McNett was my English teacher for two years at Franklin Jr. High in Janesville, WI. She team taught with Mr. Ryan, and I loved coming to class everyday. I returned to Franklin during my Senior year of college at U.W.-Whitewater requesting information for research on standards in English, and Miss McNett provided me with the materials I requested. She allowed me to sit and hand copy the objectives, not use a copy machine, which would require much less work! It gave me the opportunity to tell her how much I appreciated her teaching and also let her know that I was soon to be an English teacher as well. She was a wonderful example in and out of the classroom.

Ms. McNett was my teacher at Franklin in Janesville. She cared for her students and it showed. I appreciate what she taught me, at one of the most difficult times in life, 6, 7 and 8th grade.

Though I reside in Peoria, my heart, history and family home are in Platteville, where I grew up admiring Teddy and remember fondly when our paths would cross while walking in Platteville, going to library or church or UWP Homecoming by her home...it was a wonderful time when we would meet friends, alum and share stories of the "M" and Bo Ryan's basketball games... Teddy was always such a lady, so full of enthusiasm and a virtual legend in Platteville...when I was "home" for the men's basketball banquet I was thinking I hadn't seen her in a while and inquired about her and learned with much sadness of her illness..as with all of us who knew and loved her, her passing was so very sad and sudden. I did have the honor of seeing her in hospital the Sunday prior to her passing and she looked so at peace and everything in place...my deepest sympathy to her family...she would speak so lovingly of her Ohio family...we shall miss her presence and spirit in Platteville..I also remember with so much fondness when my mom, Zelma, had passed and Teddy offered me the dozen red roses in memory of her parents..what a gesture on her part...always thinking of others. God Bless Her and may she rest in peace.
