Mabel was born on March 11, 1925, near Cornelia, Paris Township, Grant County the daughter of Philip H. and Margaret A. (Berg) VanNatta. She was united in marriage to Richard A. Johnson on October 26, 1945 in Kahoka, Missouri. In her late teens, Mabel listened to the Gospel and held the truth of God very close to her heart, which has given her life meaning and hope in death.
Mabel was employed at the Kansas State Teacher's College in Emporia, Kansas and later at UW-Platteville. She received her degree in nursing and worked at Gray's Nursing Home until an early retirement. She felt her greatest accomplishment in life was raising her four children…her most precious possessions. She is survived and sadly missed by her children, Dana Sue (Jim) Whitney of Omaha, NE; Curtis Jay (Carolyn) Johnson of Ocala, FL; Van (B-Kay) Johnson of Emporia, KS; Jane Lee Johnson of Livingston, WI; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren. Mabel dearly loved her grandchildren and treasured her time with them. She enjoyed photography and made individual photo albums a lasting treasure for each. She enjoyed having bible studies in her home, not held together by an organization but by divine love. She loved to travel and to visit family. She enjoyed life to the fullest, being thankful for every day God gave to her.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Carley Joelle Johnson, six sisters, Velma Wehnke, Iva Weber Bennett, May VanNatta, Katherine Krepfle, Hazel Maahs, Bernice Wilson Reisen; five brothers, Joe, Frank, Edward, Guerdon, and Roy VanNatta, her former husband and the father of her children, Richard Johnson of Leek Summit, Missouri.

She was a friend all my life. I remember walking the country roads together as teens. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. And now she receives her reward for all eternity. We are happy for her.

I always enjoyed speaking to Mabel. I don't remember how or when I first met her....many many years ago though. Such a talented lady and such a beautiful smile. When I went to her house I always was treated with seeing her new photographs that she took and also listening to her talking about her children. My Mom, Bev McCabe, wrote a story about her in the Platteville Journal too. What a treasure Mabel was to Platteville. Please except my sympathy for a dear woman. Pam McCabe Wunderlin

Mabel was a blessing to all who knew her. She had a real love for all God's creatures from crows and squirrels to cows and even some pretty unlikely people, and a way of helping others see the beauty and worth she percieved. She had a quick wit, a keen sense of humor and a ready smile. My heart and prayers are with those who loved her most. I pray that you feel her presence in each bird's song, every blossom, the touch of the breeze.
