Doris Mathis

Doris “Lambie” Mathis, 94, of Platteville, died on Monday, January 18, 2016 at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville. Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. (Noon) Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Pastor Elizabeth Whitford will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. Doris was born on June 27, 1921 in New York, the daughter of Albert and Elvera Lamb, Sr. Her mother died shortly after her birth so she was raised by her Grandma Lamb until she was five years old, after which she went to live with her father, who had remarried. She spent the next years in Gloversville and Schnectady, NY. After high school she attended Business College in 1939; the following year she began nurses training in Brooklyn, NY at the Methodist School of Nursing. Doris graduated in 1942, along with her best friend, Eleanor Travis. In 1943 she married Jim Mathis, who was serving in the Army Air Craft Division. In 1948 Jim and Lambie and Bob and Eleanor built the Platteville Cleaners. After residing in Detroit from 1955-1960 they returned to Platteville and opened Platteville's first fine dining supper club in the Hearthside Hotel & Bar, from 1960-1973. Lambie returned to nursing and worked at Gray's Nursing Home until she retired at the age of 80. She is survived by brother-in-law, Herb Roes; nieces and nephew; Rosemary and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; Albert and Elizabeth Lamb, Sr.; husband, Jim; half-brother, Albert Jr. (Priscella); half-sister, Jane Crosby-Roes; nephew, David Crosby.
