Obituary

James C. Rash, 79, of Fitchburg, formerly of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2025, surrounded by his family.  Jim was born on August 15, 1946, to Clifford and Florence Rash in Janesville, Wisconsin.  He graduated from Janesville High School in 1964.  Jim graduated from UW-Whitewater with a Bachelor's degree majoring in history and political science in 1968 and later obtained his Master's degree from UW-Platteville.  In the fall of 1968, Jim began his teaching career at Mineral Point Middle School, where he taught civics and history for 35 years.  He loved teaching---always asking his students---“What's new in the News?”

Jim married Joyce Steinhoff on June 3, 1972, at the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville.  They were blessed with two children, Joanne and John.  After retiring from teaching Jim was a tour guide with Tri-State Travel, traveling to New York City, Washington D.C. and Branson, Missouri. Jim especially enjoyed traveling with his children and grandchildren, dancing, landscaping, trivia, and watching Jeopardy.  He loved attending his children and grandchildren concerts and sporting events.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; daughter, Joanne (Jesse); son, John (Laura); grandchildren, Henry, Elliot, Rebecca, Samantha, and Olivia; brothers, Wayne (Kathy) and Gary (Mary); sister, Diane (Rick) and nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Florence; father and mother-in-law, Guerdon and Hazel Steinhoff and sister-in-law, Judy Steinhoff.

Private family services were held at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville.  Burial at the Belmont Cemetery, Belmont, Wisconsin.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Dear Joyce, Joanne, John and family. We were so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. It was such a pleasure and privilege to teach along side him. For a good share of our 31 years as Social Studies teachers, Jim was Department head. One thing I’ll never forget—and I still quote him about once a week—as we were confronted by confusing and often nonsensical requirements to fulfill—was his comment, “To make it easier we need to just ‘PLAY THEGAME!’ He was a consummate professional and a joy with wom to serve the MP schools. So grateful for his example and leadership.
