Obituary

Ethan Stanton Schmitz, 26, of Platteville, formerly of Livingston, Wisconsin, made the decision to leave behind his emotional pain on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. “Nothing is more important than empathy for another human being's suffering. Nothing. Not career, not wealth, not intelligence, certainly not status. We have to feel for one another if we're going to survive with dignity.” -Audrey Hepburn

Ethan was born on August 17, 1997 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, son of Eric and Holly (Stanton) Schmitz. He graduated from Iowa Grant High School, class of 2016, where he played basketball and was very active in the art club, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He worked various jobs and most recently was working at Emmi Roth Cheese, Platteville. As a young boy he enjoyed hunting, fishing and archery. He played youth baseball and participated in youth wrestling. He was described as a young man with an “old soul.”

Ethan is survived by his parents, Eric and Holly Schmitz; brothers, Jalen (Allyson) Schmitz, Payton (Brett Bendorf) Schmitz, and Ashton (Katelyn Cox) Schmitz; sister, Kenzie Teutschmann and her father, Ryan (Melinda Mascagni) Teutschmann; grandparents, Larry and Roselyn Teutschmann, Michael Stanton, Jim (Nancy Moore) Schmitz; niece, Lorelai Schmitz and girlfriend, Ellie Nack along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Diane Stanton and Shelly Schmitz.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 6:00 PM, Sunday, March 24, 2024 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Private family services will be held at a later date. Pastor Mary Ann Floerke will officiate. The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ethan Schmitz Memorial Fund. I am so sorry for your loss of Ethan. I remember him as a fine young man who grew his hair so he could donate it to Locks of Love. Depression is a terrible disease. Hugs to you all.
