Obituary

Alexander Garrett Didius Egbers, 39, of Platteville, Wisconsin, died on Friday, September 13, 2024.  He was born on May 30, 1985, in Louisville, Kentucky, son of Jan Didius and Beverly Kay (Leysath) Egbers Smith.  

Alex graduated from Clinton High School, Clinton, Iowa, where he played football and basketball.  He held various jobs during his life, most recently at Wal-Mart, Platteville.  He enjoyed online gaming and music.

Alex is survived by his mother, Kay and loving stepfather, George Smith, father, Jan (Michelle) Egbers; two brothers, Johannes (Lori) Egbers and Cedric Egbers; niece and nephews, Isla, Johan and Thomas.   He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Betty Egbers and grandparents, Walter and Anna Mae Leysath.

Per his family wishes there will be a private family service.  The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Alex was a neighbor of ours for the last 4 years. It saddened me deeply to hear the news of his passing, as he was one of the few people that made me feel comfortable living here. He was always holding doors for people, offering to help shovel snow, and other heartfelt tasks. I will always remember my most recent interaction with him when he calmed myself and others during a tornado warning. He offered us chairs to sit on while waiting out the storm in the basement, while he kept watch upstairs. When the storm had passed, he came down and gave us all the all clear. Being someone who has storm anxiety, it was comforting to have had him there! I know none of this may seem like much, but it’s those small acts of kindness that leave an impact. I will miss seeing him in passing and these interactions. May you always remember him as someone with a kind heart, as I always will. My condolences are with you all!
