George Pennekamp

February 07, 1952 - December 05, 2024

Obituary

George J. Pennekamp, 72, of Potosi, Wisconsin, passed quietly at his home on Thursday, December 5, 2024, surrounded by his family after a valiant fight with cancer. George was born on February 7, 1952, in Platteville, Wisconsin, the son of George and Eva (Udelhoven) Pennekamp.  He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Cathy Brandt, on September 14, 1974.

George worked for John Deere Dubuque Works where he retired after 41 years.  He was a man of strong faith as a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Tennyson. He was fully committed to serving on the Potosi Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years, acting as treasurer since 1985. He was often seen faithfully maintaining the landscaping at the fire station in his spare time.  After his retirement he was able to devote time to his passions.  He loved hunting and shared that passion with his sons and grandsons.  George and Cathy wintered in Arizona, which helped him stay tan and happy for many years.  While there he stayed active playing water volleyball and walking several miles a day.  Euchre games with the “guys” was a part of the winter routine as well.  George enjoyed trapshooting when he was younger. He was an avid Packer fan and always enjoyed attending a game whenever possible.  He was always up for a game of euchre, Mexican Train or a trip with his buddies to the casino for “therapy”. He was proud to be a blood donor.   He and Cathy spent countless hours on the road for the privilege of going and watching their six grandchildren in their sporting and school events.

George is survived by his wife, Cathy; two sons, Mike (Candice) and Dean (Stacee) Pennekamp; six grandchildren, Alex, Avery, Cole, Ainsley, Addison, and Chayse; sister, Ann Pennekamp, brother, John (Linda) Pennekamp; brother-in-law, Bill Kapinus and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Eva Pennekamp and his sister, Mary Kapinus.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 14, 2024, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Friday, December 13, 2024, at the church or from 9:30 AM until the time of the mass Saturday at the church.  The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family.  Memorials may be made to the Potosi Volunteer Fire Department.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, fireman and friend.  He will be missed by all those he loved and served.  A special “THANKS” to his fellow firemen family who has provided unbelievable support and kindness.  The family wants to express their deep appreciation for any and all who have reached out.  The entire community has been so supportive during George's journey.

Cathy, Mike, Dran and family. My sincere sympathy in the loss of your beloved husband and father. I know it’s been a difficult two years for George and the family while fighting this unmerciful disease. He put up a good fight, and now he suffers no more and is at peace. May you find love and comfort with family and friends.

Sending thoughts and prayers to you and your family during this hard time. I had the privilege of taking care of George multiple times during his admissions to UW hospital. Out of all the patients I see a in a given year, I always remembered him for his great attitude and friendly demeaner despite what he was going through.
