Marilyn Hastert

August 31, 1945 - April 24, 2025

Obituary

Marilyn J. Hastert, 79, of Platteville, died peacefully Thursday, April 24th, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born August 31, 1945, the oldest child of John and Dolores (Vondra) Margan. Marilyn attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Platteville High School. After high school, Marilyn attended Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, graduating as a Registered Nurse. She married John Thomas Shilliam on September 6, 1966. During their marriage, they had two children, Thomas and Laura (Lauri). After Tom's unexpected passing in 1984, Marilyn met and was united in marriage to Donald Hastert on August 2, 1986, he preceded her in death on March 29, 2025.

Marilyn worked as a caring nurse in Platteville for 45 years, even taking on a teaching role at Southwest Tech for a few of those years. Marilyn's enjoyment of bowling led her to Don and their happy marriage. She and Don took pleasure in cheering together for the Badgers, Packers, and Brewers. Marilyn was also delighted to meet new friends and appreciated an occasional trip to the casino. After a long day, she relished relaxing with a good book and a bowl of popcorn. Marilyn's most joyful moments, though, were those spent at the many memorable family gatherings she loved to host.

Marilyn is survived by her children Tom (Amy) Shilliam, Lauri (Eric) LaVoy, Angie (Steve) Scharnell, and Amy (Tim) Hansmann; her grandchildren Briar (Maddi) Shilliam, Jon and Sarah Scharnell, and Nick Hansmann; and her sisters, Patricia (Bob) Weier, Janice (Doug) Steinback, Nancy (Wayne) Steger, Barbara Margan, Karen (Al) Wagner and Lisa (Tim) Peacock; brothers, David Margan and Richard (Sandy) Margan; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands and parents.

Funeral services will be at Noon, Friday, May 2, 2025 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville.  Pastor Mary Ann Floerke will officiate.  Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Platteville.  Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.  The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Marilyn's family would like to express their gratitude to the St. Croix hospice team and the staff at Our House Senior Living, in Platteville, for their amazing care.

From the first days of meeting you back in 1972, when you were a nurse for uncle Stan, you were so kind to this scared greenhorn ! You were so patient teaching me and always willing to help me with my questions. From then on, our friendship was solid and very valued. The years we spent working together are treasured as friendships grew among us coworkers. You were a great friend in and out of work. Oh, the memories and laughter, my friend! Rest well in peace. You are missed and will not be forgotten
