I was saddened to read of Hannes’s death. My thoughts are with you as you grieve your loss; may you be comforted by all the wonderful memories you have of your lives together. I immediately thought of his kind smile and gracious manner when I met him. I am thinking of you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my deepest condolences. Hannes was a truly wonderful person, and I will always remember his infectious laughter and warm spirit. I first met him onboard the RV Star, when I was new to the cruise industry. I was on some sort of assignment from the home office and Cornell University’s Hotel School, still trying to find my footing. Hannes welcomed me with kindness and humor, setting the tone for what became a memorable chapter of my life. I was deeply honored when Hannes and Connie invited me to their wedding onboard the ship, in Juneau, Alaska, in 1988. It was followed by an unforgettable party at the original Red Dog Saloon—with sawdust on the floor and beer served in buckets. The place was closed when we arrived, but the locals inside were allowed to stay, and they blended right into the celebration. I still have a photo of Connie dancing in her wedding dress with a massive mountain man—long hair, beard, and one giant paw of a hand resting right on the bride’s backside. It was too funny, and so perfectly captured the wild, joyous spirit of that day. I want to thank Hannes for all the kind years we worked together, and for the fond memories that remain with me to this day. He was one of a kind, and he will be deeply missed.

My dear Connie, I will remember Hannes as one of the most gracious, sincere, caring persons I have ever met. Such a beautiful soul with a joy and zest that few have. My sincere sympathies to you and your entire family.
