Obituary

John P. Hill, 87, of Platteville, WI, died Tuesday, August 12, 2025.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Platteville, WI.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 27, 2025, and on Thursday, August 28, 2025, from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory in Platteville, WI.  A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:45 PM on Wednesday.  Father Tom Kelley and Deacon Bill Bussan will officiate.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. John was born on April 23, 1938, the son of Alvin and Mary (Jones) Hill.  He was united in marriage to high school sweetheart, Cara Kemper on June 6, 1956, at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Highland, WI.  He graduated from Livingston High School, class of 1956.  John taught Biology and Science at Platteville High School from 1960 to 1965.  He then was a Regional Sales Manager for Walnut Grove Feeds and also worked for Hubbard Feeds.  John returned to teaching at Fennimore Schools as a Middle School science teacher from 1970 to 1977. John also taught at St. Joseph's in Dodgeville and Southwestern Schools, Hazel Green. Throughout his busy career, he also farmed.  In retirement, he was a National Society of Catholic Foresters insurance agent.  John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.  He enjoyed collecting Allis-Chalmers model tractors and attending toy tractor shows.  John was a huge Notre Dame Football fan.  Most of all, he enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren's school activities.

John is survived by his eight children, Theresa (Tom) Caccia, Kelly (John) Marshall, Paul (Debra) Hill, Rita Kite, Lisa (Scott) Paynter, Marti (Brent) Burdick, Ryan (Anne) Hill and Nicholas (Ana) Hill, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Cara, parents, sister, Jane Hatton, his father and mother-in-law, Glenn and Wilma Kemper, sisters-in-law, Ruth Kemper and Beth (Alvin) Anderson and nephew, Steven Anderson and niece, Cathy (Anderson) Jeffers.

Remember when he was my 8th grade teacher. Very much enjoyed his classic wit and all of the (assuming) hollows, vails, and corners that he made up! So sorry to hear of his passing. Praying for peace to be with the family during this time.

I remember Mr. Hill as my seventh grade teacher in Fennimore. I have also been able to work with Rita at IGEMS. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
