Obituary

Nancy Lee Olson, 68, died on October 5, 2026, following a tenacious battle with Multiple System Atrophy.  Nancy’s birthday was September 27, 1958.  She grew up on the southside of Chicago and was proud of her “southsider” roots.  As a child, Nancy enjoyed spending time with her Auntie and Grandma Dieck on the shores of Lake Michigan in Door County.  There, she evolved into a rock hound and a lover of all things nature, especially water.  Her time at Granny’s cottage also inspired her to publish her book, Frieda B.

Nancy was a free spirit with a plan.  She was a social worker for various group homes, women’s shelters, and educational agencies helping adolescents and families experiencing trauma.  Nancy found her true passion in school social work when she began working for the Platteville School District in 1992. She served as the liaison for the Homeless Task Force, a board member of the Family Advocates, and a champion for all.  Her work was fondly known and deeply appreciated through her retirement in 2018 and beyond.

Nancy married her dance and travel partner, Jeff Henderson, on July 2, 1983 at “The Cabin.” She loved live music, especially Jeff’s band, TioSal. Known for her vibrant outfits of fringe and pattern and sparkle, she inspired us all to let go and just dance.

Nancy had a knack for gardening, love for tradition and holidays, especially Christmas, and a strong connection to the Earth and all its wonder.  Daily, Nancy practiced mindfulness, and was always grounded by a special rock or crystal.  It was her steadfast determination and unwavering hope that allowed her to live in the moment.

Nancy’s true joy was being with her daughter Jahlieh (Ryan), son Menzie (Holli), and grandchildren Harry and Goldy.  Her perfect day would be sitting on the deck at the Hideaway, listening to the sounds of the woods, enjoying a glass of Spanish wine and olives.

Nancy’s zest for life will be missed by her brother Eric (Diana), sister Patti (John), sister-in-law Linda, brother-in-law Randy (Mary), nieces and nephews Jessica, Keith (Ashley), Rebecca, Rubie, Carly, and great-nephews Maverick, Ryker, and Axl.  She is now at peace with her mother Lynda, father Dennis, and brother/protector Michael.

A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, October 17th from 2-5pm with a service at 4pm at Melby Funeral Home & Crematory in Platteville, WI.  Nancy would love to see all in attendance wear bright patterns, colors, and flair.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Family Advocates, a shelter with support and advocacy for domestic violence, sexual assault, child and elder abuse.  Donations can be sent to PO Box 245, Platteville, WI 53818.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Nancy’s family encourages you to live as she would and “just be.”

I was privileged to work with Nancy for many years, most memorable at O. E. Gray. She had a gift for connecting with kids who had issues beyond the classroom. She was a wonderful resource, but she was also an after-hours friend. Many fun evenings were spent with her and other coworkers listening to Tio Sal and laughing hysterically as we shared stories. Nancy was kind, strong, open, and real. I am grateful for our time together.
