Obituary

Jayne K. (Oates) McPhail, 53, of Platteville, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 13, 2026.  Jayne was born on October 17, 1972, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Gary and Mary (Culver) Oates.

Jayne graduated from Platteville High School, class of “1991”.  After graduation she attended UW-Platteville to attain the required pre-requisites to transfer to Clarke College, Dubuque, and pursue a degree in nursing.  Jayne graduated from Clarke College, magna cum laude and started a rewarding career as a registered nurse at UW Hospital, Madison.  During her 25 years at UW Hospital, she earned her master’s degree in administration, which promoted her to a nurse manager position.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph Oates, sister-in-law, Andrea Haba; two nephews, Konrad and Andreas and her stepfather, Wayne Schambow.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Schambow and father, Gary Oates, her grandparents, Delos “Doc” and Genevieve “Gen” Culver and Roger and Annadel Oates.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM, Friday, August 21, 2026, at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville.   Pastor Mary Ann Floerke will officiate.  Burial will be at the Whig Cemetery, rural Platteville.  Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.  Jayne was a person to help others if possible, so in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Jayne K.
