Obituary
Michael “Mike” Myers of Ottumwa, Iowa, formerly of Platteville, beloved father, husband, and proud grandfather, died on June 23, 2026, in Iowa City, IA, at the age of 81.
Mike was born on 27 July 1944, in Wild Rose, WI, the son of Maynard and Polly (Simpson) Myers. He graduated from Platteville High School and the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1975. Mike enlisted in the Army in March 1964 and served for three years. He played Army football for Fort Meade in the East Coast League before receiving orders for Vietnam. He served in the 3 & 4 Corps areas in Vietnam before completing his 15-month tour.
Before Mike settled down, he worked at many jobs from a feed mill employee to working as a machine operator in Rockford IL. Mike then worked several years as the manager of the Timbers Supper Club in Platteville, WI. He interned with the ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms), then spent 30 years in human resources with John Deere, serving in various locations throughout the Midwest.
Mike married Sue Wisdom on April 10, 1972. They were happily married for 54 years. He said that Sue was the love of his life. He was a devoted parent to two wonderful daughters and a proud grandparent of seven grandchildren. Mike loved football, fishing, traveling, and watching the Packers, Badgers, WNBA and most of all watching his grandchildren in all of their sports. He often shared stories of his military cruises—from his first “cruise” on a troop transport from Charleston S.C. through the Panama Canal to Saigon in 1965, to a memorable 2025 cruise with Sue from Seattle to Alaska. He was dedicated to helping others and was a strong supporter of veterans. He chaired the Honor Roll Committee that installed nine statues at the veterans memorial in City Park, Platteville, WI—an accomplishment he cherished deeply.
Mike is survived by his wife of 54 years Susan J. Myers; two daughters, Michelle Faye (Brian) Myers Ortell and children Colton, Claire, Eddie & Emmett; Jill Ellen (Brian) Myers Morgan and children Mallory, Nellie & Charlie; sisters, Peggy (Jerry) Burkard and Jan Myers; brother, Don (Mary) Myers and brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry (Dar) Wisdom, Reggie (Tom) Ohlert, Randy (Donna)Wisdom, Mitch (Maryann) Wisdom and Kim (Kim) Egan.
