Elaine Rohde

Obituary
Today we celebrate the life of Elaine Ruth (Bartelt) Rohde. Formerly of Kieler, Elaine joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 23, 2026, at the age of 92.
Born in Kohlsville, Wisconsin, on October 12, 1933, Elaine was a blessing for her parents, Herman and Paula (Kurth) Bartelt. Growing up on a farm alongside an older and younger brother, Elaine gained gumption, good values and a commitment to God throughout her childhood. Her love for cooking was born in the light of her mother’s care and kitchen. Her desire to work with kids and help mold the next generation came to life after Elaine graduated with her degree in teaching from Mayville Normal School in 1953.
Early in her career, Elaine taught at multiple elementary schools – but it wasn’t until a blind date that she met the love of her life, Duane Rohde. Duane and Elaine (yes, their names rhyme) were married on August 14, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church. The two began a life – and family – together, with the Lord at the center of it all. With teaching experience in her back pocket, Elaine helped their children – Gail, Jill, Mark, Kim and Jane – learn about God’s love and His Word. Witty, steadfast and smart, Elaine emphasized working hard and demonstrating love of country and family. As an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque, Iowa, Elaine taught confirmation classes for many years, as well.
In time, Elaine earned the title of aunt, grandma, great grandma, nana and more. She shared her love for God, the Green Bay Packers, traveling, gardening, good stories, unapologetic laughter and being with family– with 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and countless people she met through the years.
Elaine lived a full life this side of heaven – and the impact she had cannot be expressed in words or any sort of historical timeline. While she faced hardships, Elaine’s trust in Jesus was evident – she had faith in the Lord and His unwavering, all-in-all goodness.
As we commemorate Elaine and her life on this earth, we rejoice that she is in heaven with Jesus, two daughters and husband. Through her final moments with us, Elaine was witty, sharp, engaging, caring and kind. Those who knew her loved her (for so many good reasons at that).
Elaine is survived by her three of her five children: Mark (Dorothy) Rohde of Dickeyville, Kim (Jerry) Ferch of Dallas, Texas, and Jane Farrar of Fort Worth, Texas; 12 grandchildren: Lindsey, Amber, Laura, Allison, Ashley, Carly, Mackenzie, Lucas, Taylor, Hunter, Austin and Rylee and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; two daughters, Gail Silbaugh and Jill Miller; her parents; and her brother, James Bartelt.
A memorial service and Celebration of life for Elaine will be held at a later date. The Melby Funeral Home of Platteville is assisting the family. Online condolences may be shared at www.melbyfh.com.
