Mabel M. Bass, 93, of Platteville, Wisconsin, died on Sunday, February 22, 2026. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2026, at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church, where a rosary will be prayed at 10:40 a.m. Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.
Mabel was born on March 5, 1932, in Hazel Green Township, Wisconsin, the daughter of Robert and Theresa (Salwolke) Runde. She was united in marriage to James Arthur Bass on August 5, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. He preceded her in death in 1997. Mabel always wanted to be a teacher and fulfilled that calling by providing childcare for many years to numerous children and by serving as a foster grandparent for St. Mary’s and Platteville Schools. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mabel enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, sewing, watching the birds, gardening—especially flowers—and was also known for her raspberries and strawberries over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Theresa Runde; her siblings, Bernie, Vincent, Francis, Gerald, and Robert Runde; her spouse, James Bass; her daughter, Ann Bass; her grandchild, Jamila Ghayyad; and her son-in-law Bill Eherenman.
She is survived by her siblings Rosie Brodbeck; Jeanne Allen (Charles); and Joe Runde (Karen); and by her children and their families: Diane Eherenman; Judy Heffron (Tom), whose children include Catherine VanHove (Chris) and Jennifer Bowser (John), and whose grandchildren include Fiona and Patrick Bowser; Susan Krantz (Brad), whose children include Elizabeth Johnson (Jeff Gaylord), Sarah Krantz (Will Kwapil), and Hal Krantz (Sara DeBrabender), and whose grandchild includes Mabel Gaylord; Joan Ghayyad, whose child includes Maryam Ghayyad, and whose grandchild includes Ari Ayala; Nina Berkani Guevara (Celedonia Guevara), whose children include Karima Berkani Baroukh (Renan Baroukh), Anthony Rineer (Carrie Tobais), and Nicholas Rineer (Natasha), and whose grandchildren include Aden, Luca, and Leila Baroukh; Jim Bass (Robin); Mary White (Cam), whose children include Jessica Sharrow (Nick), Aaron Randall, and Matt Randall (Mallory), and whose grandchildren include Nora and Seth Clements, Tommy and Kenzie Sharrow, and Stella and Hattie Randall; Lori Bass-Edgar (Charlie Nord), whose children include Zelia Edgar (Thomas Rehfeldt), Lily Edgar (Jed Kim), and Chloe Edgar; and Mike Bass (Natalie).
