Opal R. Krumwiede, 86, of Platteville, formerly of Darlington and Bensenville, Illinois, died on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Gray's Nursing Home, Platteville, surrounded by her family. She was born on July 29, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Jesse and Rachel (Pilkinton) Smith. She was united in marriage to Glenn Krumwiede on June 13, 1947. after he returned from the United States Navy. During WW II she worked for Douglas Airport where she was a riveter, and welder on the P57 fighter jets. She spent the next 15 years raising their family. Opal then worked as head cook at Flick Ready Company, Bensenville, Illinois, and later was a line supervisor at Aetna Mfg. until her retirement in 1989. As a young lady she rode Indian Motorcycles. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, gardening, sewing, and traveling with Glenn. She is survived by her three children, Rolita (Bill) Miller of Platteville; Glenn “Dee” (Carmi) Krumwiede of Darlington, WI; Richard (Lou) Krumwiede of Woodbridge, IL; 10 grandchildren, Robin (Tim) Hocking, Kimberly Marmaljo, Jeffrey (Beth) Rateike, Kevin (Sandra) Krumwiede, Chad (Sharon) Rateike, Melissa Krumwiede, Leah (Brad) Sayad, Carrie Miller, Brad Miller, Derek (Julie) Rhatigan; 17 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, parents, one great-granddaughter, one great-great-granddaughter, mother-in-law, father-in-law, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, a sister-in-law, 3 nephews, a niece. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the First Baptist Church, Darlington. Pastor Nate Whiteside will officiate. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. The Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family.
