Gwendolyn Moore

Gwendolyn Moore, 91, of Platteville died on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Platteville United Methodist Church. Rev. Brenda Whitford and Rev. Kathleen Moore will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Gwendolyn Moore Memorial Fund. Gwendolyn was born on September 29, 1923 in Hillsboro, Texas, raised in Abbot, Texas, the daughter of cotton farmer Charles Otis and Kate Branch (Weaver) Garrett. They had three daughters, Christine, Elaine and Gwen.
Gwendolyn was an excellent basketball player in her high school years and took part in the first state tournament. She was voted Sweetheart of Abbot High School. Gwen moved to San Antonio during WWII to become a secretary for one of the many Army Air Corps bases in the area. She married Lieutenant Edwin Earl Moore on July 23, 1946 at Travis Park Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas. She made lifelong friends of Mary Nell Hall and Barbara Crumm, who have remained close through the intervening decades.
In 1947 she moved to Iowa with her husband, Edwin and happily joined his extensive family. She helped him earn his bachelors, masters and PhD in education at the University of Iowa. Son, Ronald Edwin, was born October 11, 1947 followed by daughter, Celeste Elaine, on November 18, 1954. Once her husband earned his PhD in 1964, they moved to Platteville, Wisconsin.
Gwen was a homemaker, civic volunteer and church librarian for more than twenty years. She was active in the United Methodist Women, Church Women United and an original member of the Thrift Shop Board. She loved sewing, reading and travel, going to every state but Hawaii and Delaware.
Gwen is survived by her husband of 68 years, Edwin E. Moore, daughter, Celeste of Platteville; son, Ronald (Susan) of Madison; step-granddaughter, Andrea (Scott) Kittel-Phillips; two step-great-grandchildren, Isiah and Autumn and step-granddaughter-in-law, Valerie Kittel. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-grandson, John Kittel.
