Dale Griffith

Dale Gene Griffith, 89, of Platteville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Manor Care of Platteville. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Platteville United Methodist Church. Rev. Mary Ann Floerke will officiate. Burial will be at St. Rose Cemetery, Cuba City. Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2015 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the church. Dale was born on September 12, 1925, in rural Belmont Twp., LaFayette Co., WI, the son of Walter and Evelyn (Frontz) Griffith. After graduating from Rewey High School in 1943, he immediately started farming with his parents. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Dagenhardt on December 27, 1952, in Cuba City. After his marriage he farmed north of Platteville in Grant County. They raised six children. Dale and Dorothy were 4H volunteers for many years, where he spent many hours helping his children do their 4H projects. After Dorothy's death on April 18, 1980, he rented out his farm and continued to live there with his two youngest children. He married Carol (Gobrecht) Hutton on November 24, l984. After moving off the farm to Platteville in 1987, Dale worked 3 years for Southwest Supply, 10 years for the Shopping News, and 8½ years part time with Advance Transformer. He was a member and volunteer of the United Methodist Church and active in the Platteville Rotary Club for many years. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Thrift Shop. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing ball with his family and friends. He loved farming and even after retiring, he continued to help out on the family farm for many years. He loved playing cards, bowling and pitching horseshoes. He also enjoyed visiting with his friends at Ed's Café and working at the concession stand. Dale is survived by his six children, Donna (Larry) Haines, Lancaster, Diane (Howard) Slotman, Prairie du Chien, Denny (Whitnie) Griffith, Manhattan Beach, CA, Delores (Gary) Trumpy, Platteville, Darlene (Mike) Schwartz, Waunakee, and Duane (Angie) Griffith, Lancaster; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-children, six step-grandchildren; his sister, Anna Mae Nickle, Freeport, IL, and brother, Bob (Helen) Griffith, Fennimore, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wives, Dorothy in 1980 and Carol in 2011.
