Obituary
Leland L. “Boots” Leighty, 95, of Platteville died on Monday, March 9, 2015 at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2015 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Rev. Richard Leffler will officiate. Chapel military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Leland “Boots” Leighty Memorial Fund. Leland was born on April 8, 1919 in Ellenboro, Wisconsin, the son of Louis and Marie (Suhr) Leighty. “Boots” graduated from Platteville High School in 1939. He was united in marriage to Florence M. Vogel in 1940. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2009. He served in the United States Army during WW II where he was stationed in the South Pacific. After serving his country “Boots” became a police officer for the city of Platteville and Cassville. After his retirement he worked security at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque. He was a member of the VFW. Leland and Florence spent many winters after retiring in Florida. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by two sons, Richard (Lori) Leighty of Ettrick, WI; Robert (Fern) Leighty of Platteville; one daughter, Jean Jenny of Zephyrhills, FL; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; sister, Ruth Beals, and brothers, George, Richard, Dale, Cletus and William Leighty.
