Obituary
Francis W. “Ed” Abing, 92, of Platteville, died on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Lancaster Care Center, Lancaster, Wisconsin. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Platteville. Deacon Bill Bussan and Rev. Faustino Ruiz will concelebrate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where there will be a scripture wake service at 7:45 p.m.; friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the church. Francis was born on November 8, 1922 in Potosi, Wisconsin, the son of Joseph William and Clara (Droessler) Abing. He was united in marriage to Mary L. Margan on February 4, 1947 in Tennyson, Wisconsin. She preceded him in death on September 1, 2000. Francis served in the United States Marines during WW II. He was in two campaigns in the Pacific, Saipan and Okinawa. Later he was stationed right outside of Nagasaki three weeks after the bomb was dropped. Later in life Francis always liked to travel west to the Pacific Ocean where he felt he could reconnect to that time of his life. He farmed in Grant County for his whole working life for 70 years. He enjoyed deer hunting, playing cards and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, VFW and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by ten children, Terry Abing of Platteville; Greg (Carolyn) Abing of Lancaster; Dan (Nita) Abing of Grandview, MO; Ann Weaver of DeForest, WI; Tim Abing of Denver, Co; Kevin (Laura) Abing of Milwaukee; Rita Nell of Pewaukee, WI; Susie Abing of Sun Prairie, WI; Eileen “Ike” (Mark) Frank of Dodgeville, WI; Carol Abing of Milwaukee; daughter-in-law, Sue Abing of Mondovi, WI; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one step-grandson; two step-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, John Margan, Ambrose Margan, and Paul (Barb) Margan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Steve in 2012, wife, Mary, parents, brother, Walter “Tony” and Herman and sister, Anne Schmitz
