Helen was born in Platteville on August 12, 1919 to Erle and Jessie (Friday) Stoneman. She attended Training School, Platteville High School and the State Teacher's College, receiving a BS degree in 1939. She taught English prior to her marriage to Richard Brodbeck in 1942. With their first store opening in 1950, Helen and her late husband founded Dick's Supermarkets. Helen took an active role in the business, writing a weekly column, “Check it Out,” and doing radio spots for many years.
A generous contributor, frequently anonymously, Helen gave to the Platteville Hospital, churches, sports complexes and the UWP Foundation, among others. The concert hall in the Center for the Arts was named the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in recognition of their support of the arts. The Brodbecks spent much time in Florida, where Helen transferred her membership to the Sanibel Congregational Church.
An avid sports fan, Helen followed many teams from grade school through the pros. She was a member of the Florida and Platteville golf courses, P.E.O., and two bridge clubs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, in 1983. She is survived by three sons; William (Jan) of Sunset, SC; Robert (Janean) and Barry (Kimberly) of Platteville; two daughters; Barbara (Lauren) Zucco of Sparta, WI; Elizabeth Brodbeck of East Dubuque, IL; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a brother, John of Newport Beach, CA. Spending time with her large family was Helen's favorite activity. Helen was also preceded in death by a sister, Jean Fisher, of Port Washington, WI.

We want to express our sympathy to all the Brodbeck family. Our parents had so many years of fun together, whether it be at the country club, on the golf course, or all the bridge club gatherings on Saturday nights in their homes. Everyone always dressed in their best, even to go to each other's homes. Along with all the fun, Bernie and Katherine always had a lot of respect for Dick and Helen. We send love and prayers in memory of Helen.
