James R. “Jim” Shepherd, 48, of LaCrosse, formerly of Platteville, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at his home. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the James R. “Jim” Shepherd Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Jim was born on July 27, 1967 in Platteville, the son of Maynard and Judith A. (Butteris) Shepherd. He was united in marriage to Stacy Jo Fidler on August 6, 1994 in Platteville. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching football. But most of all, he loved being around friends and family and spending time with his kids. Jim is survived by three children, Jessica, Jacob, and Jason Shepherd, all of Platteville; father, Maynard Shepherd of Platteville; sister, Dana (Richard) Shepherd of Platteville; brothers, Mike Shepherd of Madison; Steve (Kris) Shepherd of Shullsburg; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and mother, Judith Shepherd.

Hello. I want to reach out my support and sympathy to Jim's family, I regret not being able to make it to the visitation this evening. First, I supported Jim in his journey of recovery. I was his caseworker who helped with housing and employment and also worked at Rave (Recovery Avenue), a place Jim liked to visit. Jim battled addiction but had much to hope for; he had friends at Rave who cared about him. The last conversation I had with Jim was about a job lead working outside at a nursery, his face lit up with that possibility. We are looking to have a memorial service up here in La Crosse, if anyone would like to attend. We don't have the best pictures of him, perhaps someone wouldn't mind sharing a photo too?
