Lina Schmoekel

Lina Schmoekel, 89, of Platteville, died on Friday, June 3, 2016 at Southwest Health Center, Platteville. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at First English Lutheran Church, Platteville. Rev. Michael Short will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at First English Lutheran Church, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. Lina was born on March 16, 1927 in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gottfried and Lina (Hofer) Friedli. She grew up in the Mount Horeb and Arthur, Wisconsin areas. She was united in marriage to Richard “Sye” Schmoekel on February 4, 1950 at First English Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on December 17, 2008. Lina worked for a short time at the Grant County Courthouse before she became the secretary for the Superintendent of the Platteville Public Schools, where she worked until her retirement.

Lina was a member of First English Lutheran Church, the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society of Bagley, Wisconsin. She and Sye enjoyed many years spending time at their cabin along the Mississippi River in Bagley and wintering in Florida. Lina was a terrific homemaker and had an artistic hand in doing calligraphy, needle work, and knitting, and she was an excellent cook and baker. Her family and faith were the two important things in her life.

Lina is survived by two children, Dave (Deborah) Schmoekel of Platteville; and Sue Schmoekel of Osprey, FL; grandson, Noah (Tiffany) Schnepper; and two great-grandsons, Jaxson and Mason Schnepper. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Alice Jerrett-Manning.
