Obituary

Blake Meyer, 34, of Platteville, died peacefully after a short illness on December 13, 2016 at UW Madison Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be from 1:00 - 4:30 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where a prayer service will be held at 4:30 p.m.  Deacon Bill Bussan will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Blake Meyer Memorial Fund. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com

Blake was born on September 16, 1982 at Southwest Health Center, Platteville, WI. He lived in Platteville all his life. Blake graduated from Platteville High School in 2001. He was a member of the PHS swim, track, and football teams. He also sang in the high school choir. He had special relationships with many of his teachers, staff, and coaches who were very supportive and inspired him to learn and try new things. Blake respected them dearly.  He had a very tight knit group of friends in middle school and high school. Those friendships continue today.

After graduation, Blake attended Western Wisconsin Technical College in Lacrosse. He returned to Platteville and worked at Dick's Production Bakery until it closed. He then worked at Montchevre Cheese factory as a pasteurizer for the past eight years. He enjoyed both jobs and made lifelong friendships.

Blake was very close with all his family and loved spending time with them.  He really enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad and friends. He looked forward to holidays and spending time at his aunt's house in Lancaster with his grandma, aunts, uncles, and cousins. His grandparent's cabin in northern Wisconsin may have been one of his favorite spots and he spent a lot of time fishing, swimming, and pontooning with his friends and family there.  He had an extraordinary bond with his sisters and brother-in-law and enjoyed hanging out with them. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to them. He was proud to be “Uncle Blake” to his two nieces and he took the job seriously.  Blake is his mom's Super Hero because he saved her life in 2008. His family will miss him terribly.

Blake was very blessed to have wonderful friends. Many laughs and good times were shared with his closest friends, Jason, Renee, Ian, and Zak. Blake was well liked by everyone he met. His absence will be felt by all forever.

Blake was an avid reader, writer, hunter, fisherman, and gamer. He loved the Packers, Badgers, and Iowa State Cyclones. He was very smart, witty, and creative.

Blake is survived and will be truly missed by his dad, Craig Meyer (Glenda Jessen) and mom, Cathy Rice; his sisters, Brandy (Kurt) Wanezek and Shannon Custer;  nieces, Addison and Kenzie; grandparents, Dorothy Meyer, Roger and Fran Field, Dick and Joanne Rice, and Carl and Helen Jessen; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Bart Rice; his grandpa, Jr. Meyer; and great-grandparents.

Blake had left his special handprint on all of our hearts and we were truly blessed.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to UW Madison, and all of you, for the love and compassion you gave Blake in the last few weeks of his life. Thank you.
