Frederick E. “Fred” Scherf, 70, of Platteville, died on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Manor Care Health Services in Platteville. Memorial services will be 12:00 p.m. (Noon) on Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where military rites will be accorded by VFW Post #5274 and American Legion Post #42. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home. Fred was born on May 27, 1946 in Mesa, Arizona, the son of Leslie and Virginia Scherf. He was united in marriage to Janet Dailey in Lancaster, Wisconsin in 1984. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2003. Fred served in the United States Army during Vietnam and he earned Expert Marksman and a Bronze Star. He was very proud of his time in the service and the American Flag. Fred was also a lifelong member of the Platteville VFW Post #5274. He was an EMT in Platteville from 1988-1993. Fred worked at Advance Transformer until it closed, he then worked various other jobs, but lastly, he worked at Piggly Wiggly in Platteville as a janitor. With Manor Care becoming his home he contributed a lot to keep it looking nice; he contributed to building projects, outdoor projects, such as planting trees, and he also donated new American Flags. Fred is survived by son, Norman (Angie) Edgington of Boscobel, WI; four grandchildren, Amber (Scott) Hines, Erika Edgington, Stephen (Courtney) Edgington, and Addison Edgington; and two great-grandsons, David and Daryl Edgington. He was preceded by his parents and wife, Janet.
