Obituary

U.S. Veteran

Patrick Thomas Carroll, age 86, “took a notion to die” on Tuesday, March 21, 2017.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Platteville.  Father Jim Murphy will officiate. Chapel Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Private family burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Reedsburg, Wisconsin.  Friends may call on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the Patrick Carroll Memorial Fund.  Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Pat was born in Reedsburg, Wisconsin on May 23, 1930, the son of Patrick “Chuck” and Icel (Smith) Carroll.  Pat was united in marriage to Mary Ann Wicks on January 22, 1955.

Pat worked in heavy highway construction or 16 years, until the joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1968.  He was a Rural Letter Carrier in Loganville, Wisconsin RR1 for several years until his transfer to Platteville in 1974, serving Route 4 until his retirement in 1996.  He was selected as Carrier of the Year by the Rural Carrier Association of Wisconsin in 1983.  Along with his careers, due to his love of music, Pat played the drums and sang in several dance bands.

Pat and Mary loved to travel in their motor home across the United States and Canada.  After retirement they would winter in Texas.  Pat had a strong Catholic faith, loved to play cards, read, drink beer, and spend time with family and friends.  He was an avid Packers, Brewers, and Badgers fan.  He was known to have the “gift of gab” and would tell great stories, therefore, he knew no strangers.  Sadly, Alzheimer's disease took these joys away.

Pat is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary; their seven children, Vickie (Wayne Bisek) Carroll, Steven (Eileen) Carroll, Kay (Dennis) Vincent, Hugh (Deby) Carroll, Brian Carroll, Kevin (Lynn) Carroll, and Peter Carroll; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary K. Prantner, Nancy Bartos, Bridget Schutz, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister.

To Mary and the Carroll girls my sympathy to a great musical family. Maureen Byrnes and I spent many nights dancing to their music and enjoying the family. Jerry and Pat probably have a band in heaven by now may he rest in peace

Sorry to hear of Pat's passing. I look to the children to show the quality and character of the man. It was my pleasure to grow up with Kevin and "mix" with the gang at the farm outside of Platteville. I know he is/was loved and will continue to live on as "his" stories continue to be told by family and friends. He always treated me with kindness and respect. Hoist one for me in Pat's honor this weekend. Kel and I are thinking of you all as you celebrate Pat's life this weekend. Travel safe all, Scott

So sorry to hear about your loss. I went to school with Hugh, Brian, Kevin and Peter and met your father a few time at functions and at school events. He was a nice man and am sure he will be missed.

We have been gone from Platteville for a few years, and knew Pat from some time ago; we are so sorry to hear he developed Alzheimer's since we have such joyous memories of him. Part of the reason we moved to New Richmond was to be with Pat's mom who also developed memory problems with dementia, like alzheimers a wicked disease. We hope your good memories carry you on; trust you are in our thoughts and prayers. Pat and Tom Jonas
