Mary Hying

Mary E. Hying, 98, of Platteville died on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at her daughter's home in Belmont.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 10, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Platteville. Monsignor Ken Fiedler will officiate.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville.  Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2017 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where there will be a parish rosary at 2:45 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Mary E. Mary was born in Elk Grove Township (the house that is now Red's Supper Club) on June 15, 1918 daughter of Herman and Victoria (Sutton) Wedige.  She was united in marriage to Anthony “Tony” Hying on December 27, 1938 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Darlington.  He preceded her in death on December 23, 2001.  Mary and Tony farmed in Grant and Lafayette County.  In the early 1960's they owned and operated Tony & Mary's in Tennyson, Wisconsin.  After a few years they moved to Platteville where Mary ran Mary's Beer Bar.  Mary and Tony later bought and ran Tony & Mary's for many years in Platteville.  They sold the bar and Mary retired for a very short time when she was asked to run the Legion Bar in Platteville which she did for a while. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society; she also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and Wisconsin Tavern League. Mary enjoyed fishing especially on the Mississippi at their cottage in Prairie du Chien.  Mary enjoyed camping, traveling, and baking, but, if you ever received a recipe from her, beware, there may be an ingredient missing.  She loved to spend time with her children and their families.

Mary is survived by her children, Jerry (Paula) Hying, Merv (Judy) Hying, Jim (Sherryl) Hying, Bob (Mel) Hying, Dave (Ruth) Hying, Doug (Joyce) Hying, Mary (Dennis) McDonald; 29 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Mel (Carmen) Wedige; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, granddaughter, Vicky Hying, parents, and nine siblings, Catherine Boatman, Wilma Gentry, Herman Wedige, Bud Wedige, Sister Victoria Wedige, Jane Bruun, Eleanor McGinnis, Gene Wedige, and Jerry Wedige.

Mary's six sons would like to THANK their sister, Mary and her husband Dennis, for all of her care given to their mother over the last years.  The family would also like to THANK Community Link, St. Croix Hospice, and Mary Kay Hoppenjan.
