Genevieve M. “Gen” Culver, 98, of Platteville, died on Friday, April 14, 2017, at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville.  Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the Whig United Methodist Church.  Pastor Carter Jorgensen will officiate.  Burial will be at the Whig Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday, at the church.  The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family.  Memorials may be made in Gen's name to the Whig United Methodist Church or the Whig Cemetery Fund.  Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Gen was born on December 15, 1918 on the home farm in Platteville Township, the daughter of E. Cronin and Mary Ann “Mae” (Prytherch) Kies.  She was united in marriage to Ernest “Doc” Culver on November 5, 1940 at Whig United Methodist Church.  He preceded her in death on April 5, 2005.  Gen attended the Stumptown School and graduated from Platteville High School in 1936.  She furthered her education and graduated from Bayliss Business College in Dubuque, Iowa and from the Platteville State Teachers College.  After she and Doc were married, World War II began and Doc was stationed in California.  While in California, Gen worked in an airplane factory as a bicycle courier.  After a few years, Doc was re-stationed to Wichita, Kansas.  During their time there, Gen worked as a secretary.  Once Doc was discharged from the service, he and Gen moved back to the home farm in Lima Township, Wisconsin.  Gen also did secretarial work for Doc for 33 years while he was the Lima Township Clerk.

Gen was a lifelong member, and very active member, of the Whig United Methodist Church.  She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, sang many duets for weddings, funerals, and various church events, and she was also the UMW (United Methodist Women) president for a number of years.  Gen enjoyed sewing, she was an excellent seamstress, and baking; where she even hosted Thanksgiving for the entire family, around 40 people, for many years.  But Gen enjoyed the most, taking care of her children.

She is survived by two children, Rev. Carson (Marilyn (Irish)) Culver of Richland Center, WI; Susan Culver of Platteville; four grandchildren, Joseph Oates, Jayne (Scott) McPhail, Sean (Myranda) Culver, and Benjamin (Tanya) Culver; eight great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Wayne Schambow and Gary Oates; sister-in-law, Anna Beth Culver; and various nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Mary Schambow; sister, Ruth (Meyer) Taylor; brother-in-law, Jerry Culver; sisters-in-law, Hila (Robert) Heffernan and Augusta (Byron) Stephens; and special friends, Ken and Gen Olson.

My fondest memories of Gen were her preparing the family Thanksgiving dinner where all of the Culver's and relatives plus friends of family gathered together to share her bounteous tables. We all brought something but it was Gen who oversaw the whole affair. It was on the wooden table in the kitchen when we stacked all the goodies that would fit and where Carson cut the turkey and we ladelled the potatoes, squash, beans, corn etc. She was also the gracious hostess who made an awesome custard pie which my son Joshua never managed to get enough of. Her passing means that I am now the oldest of the clan. Sister in Law, Anna Beth Henneman Culver.

I have many fond memories growing up with the Culver family. Aunt Gen could do know wrong in my eyes. One thing I do remember liked it happen yesterday. Aunt Gen would drive with pedal to the metal. Carson and I would side on the floor of the front seat. I my memory service me correct it was Desoto or Chrysler. I could write a book of things we kids to make Aunt Gen's life a living hell. Her heart was so big she would scold and the laugh at our acts of wrong. Love You Aunt Gen will miss you.

Please accept my deepest sympathy in the recent passing of Mrs. Culver; having visited Whig Church, I always enjoyed her spirit and knew some of her relatives in my Platteville youth (Donna Taylor, Carson Culver) and most recently Sue for whom I substituted on piano when home from Peoria. Thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time of grieving; I can also empathize with the loss of a mother. God Bless. Respectfully, Carolyn Schuldt PHS 1960 UWP 1964
