Charlotte A. “Char” Schenkel, 58, of Platteville, died on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at UW Hospitals and Clinics, Madison.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at First English Lutheran Church, Platteville.  Rev. Connie Matye will officiate.  Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin, Illinois.  Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday, at the church.  Memorials may be made to First English Lutheran Church.  Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Char was born on November 1, 1958 in Geneva, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Jr. and Vivian (Hagen) Thorncroft.  She graduated from Geneva Community High School in 1976 and Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor's Degree in 1980.  Char met Keith Schenkel in 2000 and they were united in marriage on August 7, 2004.  Char began working at Potosi High School in 1980, where she retired from in 2017 after 37 years of service. While she was working at Potosi she also received her Master's Degree from UW-Platteville and also worked at H&R Block for 13 years as a tax specialist.  Char was a member of First English Lutheran Church.  She always wanted to keep her mind busy whether it be doing cross-stitch or puzzle books.  One of her favorite things was to sit on the deck and drink coffee while reading a book.  She also enjoyed taking trips up north to a cabin on the lake where she and Keith would go on pontoon rides and just relax.  Char had a deep love and passion for teaching; she wanted to teach her students about life and if they learned a little about business at the time that was just a plus.  She was a person that could make anybody smile as soon as they came into a room, be it with her wit and sense of humor or just her kind heart.

Char is survived by her husband, Keith of Platteville; two step-children, Patrick (Shannon) Dahnen of LaVern, MN; Joanna Schenkel of Kansas; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carol (Dick) Laughlin of Rockford, IL; Nancy (Dale) Bowgren of Watertown, WI; Pam Thorncroft of Aurora, IL; brother-in-law, Jake (Verna) Schenkel of Sioux Falls, SD; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her stepfather, Patrick Christensen.

You have my deepest condolences. I am so very sorry for your loss. Charlotte was a bright light in this world and we all lost a special person when she died. Her smile could light up a room and she had a great personality and kind heart as you all well know. My thoughts and prayers will be with Keith and both of your extended families in the coming weeks. Asking God to help you all find some peace in this heartbreaking loss.

Dear Keith, Please accept our deepest sympathy. Char was a wonderful teacher and a lovely person. She taught both of our children, Leanne and Micah Droessler. I noticed Micah had posted a message on Facebook, noting that she had taught him typing which he uses everyday of his life as Lead IT at Winona State University. Funny story though as he was rather a screw off in high school: We were taking the kids to Disneyland during the month of November and they were told to do all their makeup work before we left. Guess whose class Micah blew off and did NOT complete? Yup, Ms. Thorncroft's typing class. It all worked out though. Thanks for keeping us posted during Char's long fight. We kept her in our prayers and will keep you in our prayers as well. Deb & Gary Droessler
