Charlotte A. Hying, 95, of Platteville, died on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at her home, surrounded by family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Platteville. Father John Blewett will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where there will be a Scripture Wake Service at 3:45 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church. Charlotte was born on March 24, 1922 on the home farm in rural Lancaster, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frank and Rosa (Pennekamp) Holzer. She graduated from Fennimore High School in 1940. Charlotte was united in marriage to William “Bill” Hying on October 4, 1943 at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Lancaster. He preceded her in death on January 29, 2010. Charlotte worked at Burgess Battery Factory for four years until their closing and then went to work for Fendall; after which, she became a Tupperware salesperson. But above all and her favorite thing of all was being a mom to her six wonderful children that she was so proud of. In 1980 her and Bill retired to Chetek, Wisconsin where they lived for 25 years before moving back to Platteville. Charlotte enjoyed doing arts and crafts, playing card games, especially the game of Blitz. She was also an incredible seamstress; she made many quilts, afghans, and table runners. She would make an afghan for every grandchild for their high school graduation and a quilt for every wedding. These hand-made items will be cherished for years to come.
Charlotte is survived by six children, Bill (Judi) Hying of Torrance, CA; Suzanne Larson of Platteville; Marilyn (Tom) Brugger of Platteville; Rosena (Gary) Wetter of Platteville; Dennis Hying of Potosi; and Greg (Marlene) Hying of Browntown, WI; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson, Chad Larson; son-in-law, Charles Larson; four brothers; nine sisters; and two brothers-in-law, Anthony (Mary) Hying and Leo (Inez) Hying.
