Nathan Swallow

April 17, 1925 - August 29, 2017

Obituary

U.S. Veteran

Nathan Douglas Swallow died Tuesday, August 29th in Lancaster, Wisconsin.  Visitation will be held for Nathan Swallow from 10 - 11 a.m., Saturday, September 2nd at Melby Funeral Home, 1245 N. Water Street, Platteville.  A memorial service for Nathan will be held immediately after, beginning at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a favorite charity of the donor's choice.  A nice, long sip of a cold beer in his honor would be appropriate, also.

A resident of Grant County for his entire life, he was recognized as an outstanding steward of the land, and a devoted patriot of the United States.

Mr. Swallow was born on April 17, 1925 on his family farm in Grant County, Wisconsin.  His parents were Roscoe Swallow and Agnes Gundlach Swallow and with his brothers, Ned and Brenton, the three boys got into many shenanigans and scrapes.  His strong work ethic, which followed him all of his life, was exhibited early on his family's farm and in the fact he chose farming as his life's work.  He was most comfortable being out of doors and working.

In 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Germany where he served.  He remained involved in veterans' interests and activities for the remainder of his life, giving most of his time to the American Legion.  He was Commander and held other leadership positions of Post No. 42 in Platteville, Wisconsin.  In addition, he was a member of Melody Masonic Lodge in Platteville for decades where he also served in leadership.

Nathan was blessed in a companionship with Angeline (Angie) Bucher of Platteville for many years until her death in 1995.

He enjoyed the latter part of his life in a companionship with Maxine Haney at his home in Platteville, where they maintained the home, yard, and garden in immaculate condition.  They enjoyed sharing the produce from their garden with family and friends. His other interests included hunting, fishing, and reading.

Mr. Swallow loved and was loved by his many friends and family members, particularly his six nieces and nephews, and he took considerable pride in all of their accomplishments.    He will most be remembered for his solid values and as a great steward of the land.

Mr. Swallow is survived by his nieces and nephews, Kim Swallow of Janesville, Kathleen Rahn, of Madison, Kristi Torres of Pardeeville, Jan Pickett of Kerrville, Texas, Jack Swallow of Midland, Texas, and Chuck Swallow of Kerrville, Texas, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.  Additionally, he is survived by Maxine's sons and their wives, Gary and Bev Haney and Gene and Jane Haney. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Roscoe and Agnes Swallow, and his brothers, Ned Swallow and George Brenton Swallow.

The family of Nathan Swallow is deeply grateful to the Dr. Robert Stader and to the nursing and care staff of The Atrium in Lancaster.  Your love and care of Uncle Nathan was above and beyond what is typically expected and we could not have asked for more.

To the family of Nathan, you have my sympathy in the passing of Nathan. I'm Angeline's grand daughter and have many memories of Nathan. I won't be able to make the funeral as I will be at the fair, but my thoughts will be with you. Rest in peace Nathan.

I met Nathan only once and our conversation has been etched in my memory for over 20 years. It was at my father's funeral (Martin) that Nathan told me several wonderful stories about being present when they first brought my father in to recover from his wounds suffered in Korea as well as stories about his recovery. It was very kind of him to take the time to share those memories which I have passed on to my children. It was obvious he was a kind and caring soul. May he rest in peace.
