Obituary

Eugenia “Gen' Shea, 92, of Platteville, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017 at Manor Care, Platteville, Wisconsin.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Platteville.  Rev. John Blewett will officiate.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville.  Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville.  Memorials may be made to the Gen Shea Memorial Fund.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Gen was born on April 24, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, daughter of John and Eleanore (Orszulak) Gonko.    She was united in marriage to Murtaugh “Murt” Shea on October 18, 1952 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Chicago. Murt preceded her in death on January 1, 2012.  She graduated from Josephinum High School, Chicago IL in 1943.  After high school she attended St. Elizabeth School of Nursing Unit of Loyola University, Chicago, where she graduated in 1946.   After nursing school, she worked at Children's Memorial Hospital in the operating room until she and Murt started their family, when Gen stayed home to raise their children.  

After Gen and Murt were married, they lived in Utica, NY and later moved back to the Chicago area to Mt. Prospect, IL.  In 1966 they moved to Platteville where they resided ever since.  She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Platteville.  She was on the Platteville Auxiliary and very active with Platteville's annual Strawberry Festival in its early  stages. She enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, bingo,  sewing, and most of all spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Gen and Murt enjoyed traveling and spending many winters in Green Valley, Arizona.

Gen is survived by her four children, Sue (Joe) Dunphy, John (LuAnn) Shea, Patrick (Mary Ellen) Shea, and Dan (Melanie) Shea; grandchildren, Shannon (Paul) Alexander, Jill (Louie) Wiederholt, Lori (Jed) Shea-Polzin, Mark (Chelsea) Shea, Steven (Tessa) Shea, Jeffery (Anna) Shea, Amy (Jaime) Dye, Bryan (Jacey) Shea, Eric (Kimberly Burdt) Shea, Emily (Justin) Craddock, Matt (Peter Koster) Ingram, Lukas Shea, and Gabriel (Raechal Sabin) Shea; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Burch; and brother-in-law, Roy Gollnick, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; grandson, David Shea; sister, Lorraine Gollnick; and brother-in-law, Jerry Burch.
