Obituary

Evelyn M. McCullough, 89, of Platteville, died on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Southwest Health Center, Platteville.  Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 20, 2017 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville.  Rev. Zayna Thomley will officiate.  Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Platteville.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com

Evelyn was born on June 23, 1928 in Canaseraga, New York, daughter of Devillo and Mary (Glover) Doud.  She was united in marriage to Earl McCullough on July 1, 1950 at Canaseraga, New York.  Evelyn graduated from New York State Teachers College-Buffalo with a BS in Home Economics. In 1966 Evelyn and Earl and their family moved from Grand Island, New York to Platteville.  Evelyn loved little children and was the director of Platteville Pre-School for 20 years.  She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Platteville.  In retirement, she and Earl enjoyed spending their winters in Queen Valley, Arizona.  She was an avid life-long sewer and enjoyed making clothing and gifts for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.  She also liked to paint with watercolors, create stained glass artwork, and crochet.  She especially loved cooking for family gatherings - the larger the gathering the better.   She had a keen eye for identifying birds and loved to feed them and watch them building nests around the yard.  She enjoyed fishing with Earl and spent many an afternoon on what Earl liked to call "River Patrol".  Her love of family was abundant.

She is survived by her husband, Earl; five children, Ken (Judy) McCullough, Mark (Jody) McCullough, Carol (Patrick) McCullough-Dieter, Jill (Charlie) Clough and Nancy (John) Wunderlin; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Marshall and brother, James (Doreen) Doud.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Jeanette Gelser.

Aunt Evelyn --- Thank you for always making our family feel welcome in your house. We always remember the meal you prepared for us on our way to Yellowstone with 6 kids in tow. It was a wonderful time.

My deepest condolences to my Uncle Earl, my cousins, and all of your families on your loss. I have many fond memories of celebrating holidays and summer vacations at Grand Island and Buffalo. Among those memories are ones of Evelyn cooking Thanksgiving dinner for us throngs of relatives and all of us sitting around her enormous table to eat and be thankful. I will have a special prayer for Evelyn and all of her family at our upcoming Thanksgiving dinner.

I was so sorry to hear of Evelyn's passing. I meet her for the first time at their anniversary party in Madison in 2015. In that brief time, I learned she possessed a quiet beauty, and was just a lovely on the inside. Please know you all remain in our thoughts and prayers.
