Obituary

Raymond A. Dickens, 95, of Platteville, died on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Bob Bennett will officiate. Chapel military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Memorials may be made to the Raymond A. Dickens Memorial Fund. Ray was born on May 3, 1922 in Elk Grove Township son of Ross and Esther (Miller) Dickens. He was united in marriage to Jean Louis Wedige on April 4, 1951 at First English Lutheran Church, Platteville. Ray served in the United States Navy during WWII where he was stationed on the USS Pennsylvania. He was a disabled WW II Vet and belonged to the DAV and VFW. After serving his country Ray worked for at the Eagle Garage from 1951 to 1968, and for Kies Chevrolet from 1968 – 1972. In 1972 he went to work for the Platteville Community School District where he worked until his retirement on May 26, 1988. As a young man he enjoyed hunting, and was a car enthusiast his whole life. Ray was very active at the Platteville Senior Center where he enjoyed volunteering his time, especially in the kitchen, and always enjoying a good game of cards.

Ray is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean; two sons, Ronald (Jackie) Dickens of Mesa, AZ; Timothy (Kerry) Dickens of Dubuque; three grandchildren, Ronnie (Melisa) Dickens, Chelsea (Alex) Brosnahan, and Brandon Welch; two great-grandchildren, Drew and Brianna Dickens and one great-great-granddaughter, Khloe Dickens; sister, Betty Leyh of Platteville; special family friend, Sandy Margan. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenny in 2000, his parents, and one sister, Dorothy David in 2005.

The family would like to THANK Dr. White, St. Croix Hospice and the Platteville EMS for all of their care given to Ray.

Ray was a dear man who took so much pride in O. E. Gray Elem. where I met him. As our custodian, he worked hard to help make the school a great place to be for students and staff. My sympathy to Jean and the rest of his family.
