Obituary
Jean C. Altfillisch of Platteville, formerly of Benton, Wisconsin, died on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Epione Pavilion, Cuba City. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Father Dave Flanagan will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Benton. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Regina Caroline was born on December 4, 1929 to LeRoy and Bernice (Murray) Fritz in Benton. She is the seventh born of nine children – Cora “Corrie”, LeRoy Jr. “Bud”, Florence “Min”, Homer, Suzanne “Sue”, Robert “Bob”, Jean, William “Bill”, and Antone “Tony”. On February 14, 1950 Clarence “Ben” Benjamin Altfillisch asked her hand in marriage and they were married on September 12, 1950 in Benton and resided there for many years raising four children, Mike, Jim, Jeff and Mary Jo. “Ben” passed away on November 10, 1989.
She graduated from Benton high school on May 23, 1947. She received a teaching degree for grades 1 through 6 from the University of Platteville on June 2, 1950. Her first teaching job was fourth grade in Brodhead, Wisconsin for 2 years. She then taught 2 years in Benton and 27 years at Southwestern with most years teaching second grade. In May 1989 she retired from teaching and received the Recognition of Service from the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. She spent many Saturdays baking bread, pies and cinnamon rolls. Jean lived in Benton until 1995 where she then moved to Platteville to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She loved molasses cookies, chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and Three Musketeer candy bars.
She is survived by four children, Mike of Delafield, WI; Jim of Madison, WI; Jeff (Correna) of Platteville; Mary Jo (John) Freeborg of Madison; eight grandchildren, Josh, Ben, Jackie, Jimmy, Britney, Alex, Emily and Isaiah; seven great-grandchildren, Ava, Liliana, Jospehine, Case, Adalynn, Kolten and Warren; brothers, Homer Fritz, Bill (Betty) Fritz, and Tony (Carole) Fritz and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter-in-law, Shirley Altfillisch, brothers, LeRoy and Bob and sisters, Cora Mascow, Suzanne Barlage and Florence Burns.
