Dan was born in Platteville on December 8, 1953, the son of Lawrence and Frances (Schult) Carl. He graduated from Platteville High School in 1972. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Platteville for almost 50 years; which is where he met his wife, Alleine LaChine, while they were making pasties together. He was united in marriage to Alleine in 2008. Dan was a member of Platteville Elk's Lodge #1460 where he was an Esteemed Loyal Knight. Dan also taught Hunter's Safety and received an award for 25 years of service. He was noted in the community and consulted for his knowledge in firearms. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter; he earned many trophies for marksmanship.
Dan farmed for forty years and was known for his love of caring for the animals. For the past ten years he was shop foreman for Digman Construction. Dan was very proud to be a member of the Digman crew, which he considered his second family. He was proud of his work with the Digman antique tractor collection. Dan would regularly socialize and strike up conversations while at Ed's Cafe, Country Kitchen, and the Annex. He dearly loved his golden retriever, Goldie, and they were often seen walking through town.
Dan is survived by his wife, Alleine; step-daughter, Margarita Vibian; granddaughter, Maria Johnson; three sisters, Jane (Randy) Abing, Lois (Alan) Morrison, and Rita (Kelvin) Luna; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
