Norman was born on May 20, 1933 in Cuba City, Wisconsin, son of John and Mina (Lindsay) Mauthe. He was united in marriage to Joyce M. Weigel on May 1, 1971 at the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville. She preceded him in death on September 10, 1994. He worked for Farley & Loetscher Manufacturing Co. in Dubuque, and then he went to work at John Deere Dubuque Works for over 31 years retiring in 1992. He was a proud member of the UAW Local 94 and remained one after his retirement. He was was member of the Lutheran Church of Peace. Norman was an avid horseshoe pitcher and promoter of the game and was the lifelong tournament director for the Platteville tournaments. In 1981 he was one of the founding members of the Platteville Horseshoe Pitching Association and served as vice president since the mid 80's. He led the bringing of the state tournament to Platteville in 2004 and two more have since followed. In 1999 he was inducted into the Wisconsin Horseshoe Pitching Hall of Fame. He loved motorcycling with friends and especially his brother Leonard in their younger years. He enjoyed bowling, gardening and sharing his vegetables with others, playing euchre at the Platteville Senior Center, Elks Lodge and VFW, hunting with his grandson Gabe, and he loved to watch televised sports, but in particular Wisconsin Badger basketball and football games as well as the Green Bay Packers.
Norman was a devoted Christian and lived a life with God's love in his heart. He was a faithful and caring husband, a loving and providing father, a person who gave of himself to others and took the time to listen intently and genuinely cared. He was an honest man and worked hard in life and believed in the importance of being meticulous at his craft. He was a quiet and humble man who led by example in that he showed people that it is the easiest thing in the world to be kind. Norman will be deeply missed by his loved ones in this realm, but we rejoice at his welcoming to God's kingdom and his reunion to his beloved wife Joyce.
He is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey (Amanda) Mauthe and Mark Mauthe; two grandchildren, Gabe and Lilli; one sister, Ruth (Charles) Halverson; two brothers, John and Leonard Mauthe; brothers and sisters-in-law, Delbert Heins, Jane Mauthe, Barb and Charlie Bratton, Mike and Buffey Weigel, and Ron and Julie Weigel; and many nieces and nephews.
