Obituary
Vincent J. Abing, 86, of Platteville, passed away at home after a brief illness, with his family by his side and the care of St. Croix Hospice. Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Deacon Bill Bussan will officiate. Chapel military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville, at a later date. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Vince Abing Memorial Fund. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.
Vince was born on February 5, 1932 in Tennyson, Wisconsin, son of Harry and Lillian (Hufnagel) Abing. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Dean on May 14, 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. He graduated from St. Andrew's Catholic School, Tennyson, in 1950. Vince served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He worked at Farley & Loetscher, Dubuque, and for Harry Williams Tree Service, Platteville. For 27 years he worked at John Deere in the foundry, retiring in 1989. He was a member of UAW Local 94, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and a past member of the VFW. He enjoyed bowling, tending to his garden and lawn, trimming trees, doing puzzles, playing euchre and 500, and going for a ride. He also liked following the Green Bay Packers.
Vince is survived by his wife, Marilyn; five children, Wayne (Kris) Abing, Leslie (Chuck Gruenberger) McDermott, Tim (Theresa) Abing, Lori (Mark) Schmidt, and Lynnette (Butch) Bloom; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rosalyn Hartung, Karin (Steve) Peacock, and Harriet Snyder; three brothers, Carl (Beth) Abing, Al (Jan) Abing and Mike (Kim) Abing; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe Friederick, Roger (Sharon) Wolske, Ron (Hallie) Wolske, LaVonne Rice, Jean Rice, Merle (Sheena) Rice, Dick (Joanne) Rice and Peg Rice; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael; parents; sisters, Patty Abing in infancy and Mary Friederick; and one brother, David Abing.
