Obituary

Eugene A. Olson, 72, of Belmont, Wisconsin, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Platteville, where military rites will be accorded by VFW Post #5274 and American Legion Post #42. Rev. Joel Kluender will officiate. Burial will be at the Belmont Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday, at the church. Memorials may be made to the Eugene Olson Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Eugene was born on July 9, 1946 in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of Ardell and Barbara (Rowe) (Olson) Helms. Eugene graduated from Belmont High School in 1965 and joined the Army Reserve. He was united in marriage to Jeanne Buss on May 13, 1972 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Platteville. Eugene worked at Nodolf Lumber, in Belmont, until retiring after 43 years. He was also a member of the Belmont Fire Department. Eugene enjoying fishing and watching NASCAR.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne; two children, Jeff (Sarah) Olson and their children, Ayden and Lilli; and Juli (Joe) Ubersox and their children, Nolan, Brady, and Emma; three siblings, Jerry (Julie) Helms, Beth (Mark) Hammes, and Bruce (Becky) Helms; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom (Geri) Buss, Kay (Bill) Holtz, and Sue Olson; as well as, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ardell Olson, and mother and step-father, Barbara and Bud Helms; brothers, Bob “Gopher” Olson and Randy Helms; sister, Nancy Krueger; mother and father-in-law, Charles and Mildred Buss; and special Uncle, Erling Olson.
