Eila B. Butterworth, 107, of Platteville, Wisconsin, died on Thursday, April 8, 2021. Services for Eila are pending, with burial to be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Eila was born on August 14, 1913 in Whiting, Iowa, daughter of William and Edith (Cutler) Brooks. She was married to Arthur S. Butterworth, Sr., and he preceded her in death on August 11, 1963. She was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Platteville. She received her BS from Iowa State University and MA from the University of Arizona. Eila worked with her husband at Electrons, Inc, Platteville, and later UW-Platteville, where she was Director of Teacher Placement. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Delta Zeta and honor societies, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Nu and Phi Upsilon Omicron. She was a member of the VISTA volunteers 73 and in 2009 inducted into the UW-Platteville Education Hall of Fame.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and step-son, Arthur, Jr.. While she had no immediate family to mourn her passing, she is survived by a multitude of loving friends from all over the country and the world.

Please accept my deepest sympathy in Mrs. Butterworth's passing...I did not know her well as my mom did, but know she was highly respected by all who were part of her long life...she was an accomplished woman. I was fortunate enough to do Eila's hair for a little while at Edenbrook Platteville. She was so intriguing to talk to. She shared lots of wonderful stories from her childhood and her days at UWP. She also shared a very funny story about how she's able to live so long. However, it may not be appropriate for this forum......lol. I loved visiting with her!

What a wonderful lady. We loved our conversations and the time we spent with her. We really got to know her through Bob Velzy and through the years until Bob's passing. Thank you Eila for those precious times.

Eila was a beautiful person. The world lost a kind, intelligent loving soul with Elia’s passing. I knew Eila as my awesome bird-watching next door neighbor. I had the pleasure of cutting her grass and making her sanctuary (her back yard) beautiful as a boy. I would enjoy many conversations with Eila on her screened porch where she would regale me with tales of her world travels. The Ipsons, Bob Velzy and of course her other next door neighbor Jack Tiedeman were dinner guests and often took Eila out for a dinner and perhaps a Shakespeare play. Eila was an avid supporter of the arts and made Platteville a better place as a resident for what to many is a lifetime. It was not unusual for “friends” from abroad to visit her as she had visited them. To hear accents from around the world was a pleasure growing up. Eila was as sharp or SHARPER than most as she topped the Century mark. When I visited her she would ask me how Kelly, Katelyn and Hunter were doing. She cared. My mom Phyllis Thompson had a long friendship with Eila. She and my mom were ahead of their time as women that were well traveled, intelligent and generous with their time. I think of Eila as more of a second mother than any other person. She was simply a very special human being. She was loved. She shall be missed, but not forgotten. Peace be with you Eila.
