Obituary

William E. Long, 90, of Platteville, WI died Sunday, December 28, 2025. A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 10:00AM until Noon, where chapel Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5273, Platteville.  Melby Funeral Home & Crematory of Platteville is serving the family. William was born on November 18, 1935, in Platteville, Wisconsin, the son of Harold and Rita (Schaffer) Long.   He served in the Army and was a member of the VFW Post #5274.  William was united in marriage to Penny Kieffer.  She preceded him in death.  He worked for John Deere, Dearth Motors, many years doing maintenance at Gray's Nursing Home. In retirement he worked part-time at the Belmont Truck Stop.  William enjoyed spending time with his family.  He also liked Harley Davidson motorcycles.

William was survived by his daughter Lisa (Craig) Vorwald, grandchildren, Cody (Erin) Klein, Jamie  Schmitt, Brittany (Michael) Murphy and Dakota (Heather) Schmitt, great-grandchildren, his buddy Lakota, also known as “Squirt”, Jackson, Michael, Makayla, Liam and Lily, brothers, John, Roger (Mary ) and Jim (Janelle) and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, son, Tim Long and his parents.

Thank you for all that you have done for me/us I can't believe how you have been able to run around with me Jamie, Brittany, Dakota And if that wasn't enough somehow he was able to run around and do all that you did with my son You're great grandson you went above beyond and out of this world for all that you have done for everyone I really can't thank you enough, Hope I get to see you Grandma and Tim somehow someway again someday love you.

He was my great Uncle, I didn't know him well but he was still my family and he was pretty sweet. He attended my 16th birthday in April 2025 and it felt nice, maybe he was thinking about when he turned 16. I was there next to him in the hospital and as unfortunately as it is, I am glad he had his family and friends around him and is no longer suffering in that bed. Rest in Peace Uncle Bill
