Obituary

Virginia Lou (Jenkins) Gibson, age 96, of Platteville died Saturday, October 1, 2022, following a recent succession of illnesses, first and foremost Shingles – for which she was regrettably not vaccinated. Her message to everyone is “Don't wait. Get the Shingles vaccine!”

Born July 5, 1926, in Platteville to Ernest and Grace (Tracy) Jenkins, Virginia – also known as “Ginger,” – was the oldest of three sisters. She grew up on their family farm directly south of the Platteville Mound and attended grades 1-8 at West Mound School. Virginia graduated from Platteville High School in 1944.

August 8, 1947, she married Nolan J. Gibson of Minneapolis, MN, whom she met while he was visiting an Army buddy in Platteville. They made their home in Platteville until he passed away in 2019, just two months shy of their 72nd anniversary.

Virginia was an excellent record keeper and typist. She credited her 8th grade teacher, Kenneth Webster, with teaching her to type. Her clerical skills and attention to details lead to her working for the U.S. Geological Survey office and as a medical secretary for several local doctors prior to longtime positions at the Cuba City Medical Center and Platteville Municipal Hospital, working with purchasing and maintaining pharmaceutical and supply inventories.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her two younger sisters: Genevieve Ann Foti Melotik and Donna Jean Smith. She was also preceded in death by all her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and four nephews on the Gibson side of the family.

She is survived by her only child, Patricia Huber, son-in-law Jim Huber, granddaughter Heather Huber, and grandson Timothy Huber and his wife, Shannon Brokish. She is further survived by her beloved cat, Tammy Lou, as well as three cousins (Joyce Goke Ebert, Geraldine Goke Swart, and Betty Kies Swart, all of Platteville) and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Friday, October 7, 2022 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Private graveside services will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Anyone wishing to honor Virginia is encouraged to donate to a local animal shelter. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com

So sorry for this loss, Patti Lu and family. I mostly remember your annual visits to MN, all us cousins swimming and shopping and playing games in the yard. Despite her "ginger" hair, I always recall my Aunt Ginger being calm, smiling, and ladylike, with a good sense of humor, although she would purse her lips and gently chide you if she thought you were behaving too tomboyish! She clearly loved Uncle Nolan, which must have set a good example to you and Heather and Timothy. I bet she enjoyed being a grandmother! May she now also enjoy all the blessings of heaven, reunited with so many of her loved ones!
