Obituary

Velma R. Melssen, 88, of Platteville, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Monday, April 3, 2023. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Platteville. Father John Blewett will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Platteville. Friends may call from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where there will be a rosary at 3:30 PM. Friends may also call from 9:30 AM until 10:15 AM on Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Velma R. Melssen Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Velma was born on March 4, 1935, the daughter of John and Rose Mae (Wunderlin) Reuter. She married Leonard Melssen on September 9, 1961 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dickeyville, WI. Velma was a member of the St. Mary's Council of Catholic Women and St. Mary's Parish. Velma and Leonard farmed for the past 48 years. Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to play cards, especially Euchre and 500 Rummy and watching Wheel of Fortune and the Green Bay Packers. Velma was a horseshoe player. She loved to bake and was a master of the home-cooked meal. Every meal was followed with pie, angel food cake or anything sweet. Velma's main goal in life was being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Velma was survived by her husband of 61 years Leonard, and children Matilda “Tilly” (Tim) Weigel, Joe (Karla) Melssen, Jane (Jerry) Donar, Gail (Kris) Krause, Lenny Melssen and Ken (Michelle) Melssen, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, sisters, Dorothy Klein and Anna (Gene) Stelpflug, brother, John (Rose Marie) Reuter, brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Matilda Reuter, Rosemary Reuter, Loretta (Emil) Miesen and Wilma (Joe) Fuerstenberg, brothers Clinton and Clifford (Loretta) Reuter and brothers-in-law Herbert Klein and Charles Melssen.

Velma's family wishes to thank everyone at Edenbrook and St. Croix Hospice for the excellent care given to Velma and for the care and compassion shown to her family.

Melssen, We are so sad to hear of Velma's passing. She was always smiling and happy when we would visit on the farm with our parents, Louie and Kay Reisch.
