Obituary
Phyllis Shipley (nee Dobbs) passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023, two weeks and 84 years after she was born in Rome, Illinois on February 22, 1939. She grew up in southern Illinois and graduated from SIU Carbondale with a bachelors degree in Education. While pursuing her degree, she met Marvin Shipley, whom she married on June 18, 1960. This union produced two sons, Kirk and Eric.
Phyllis began her career teaching elementary school, and she was a very talented teacher. Her great love of books and reading, however, led her to being a librarian later in life. Another of her great talents was cooking. (Anyone who tasted her pork chops and onions in sour cream or her superb fudge, will testify to this.) And to their immense benefit, she taught her sons to cook as well. When they retired, Phyllis and Marvin enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. in their RV, which let them indulge in one of their great joys, doting on their grandchildren whom they took on many RV trips. Door County, Wisconsin was one of their favorite destinations.
Many people have commented on Phyllis's kindness, love for her family, and ability to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. She was a cat lover and enjoyed being surrounded by family photos, natural beauty, and flowers, especially sunflowers. She is survived by her son Kirk and his wife Janet, her son Eric and his wife Charlotte, her grandchildren, Emma and Garrett, a sister, Audrey, and a brother, Grady. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Harold, her sister, Vera Sue, and her husband, Marvin.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 at 12:00 (Noon) at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory in Platteville, Wisconsin. Pastor Gus Carns will officiate. Family and friends may call from 11:00 AM until the time of the services. Online condolences may be made at ww.melbyfh.com.
