Neta was born on April 14, 1931, in Elk Grove Township, south of Belmont, WI. She was the daughter of Joseph and Ada (Wickham) Ward. Neta, and her twin sister, Neva, were the youngest of ten children.
Neta grew up on a farm south of Belmont, WI, and later moved to Platteville, WI, in 1944. She attended the Strawberry Country School and later Platteville High School. After graduating from Platteville High School in 1950, she worked briefly as a telephone operator. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Sheldon on October 18th, 1950, in Lancaster, WI, and they were married until Ken passed away on May 23, 2013.
Neta left the Platteville Telephone Company shortly after marriage to raise four children. However, she returned to the Platteville Telephone Company in 1968 when all four children were in school. She worked there for another 15 years until the company moved to a more automated system. Later, she worked for Lands' End in their telephone order department, but anyone who knew her knew being a telephone operator was her favorite job.
Neta attended New Hope Assembly of God Church for many years. She helped with Sunday School and made children's quilts for missionaries around the world. Neta loved to play piano and grew up with her family singing around the piano. After Neta retired, she bought a piano and played for many years. Neta and Ken loved to play in Euchre tournaments and spend time with their family. Neta also loved reading, making quilts, baking, and writing letters. She also wrote a crime fiction novel on her typewriter. It was never published, but she enjoyed writing the book.
Neta was an avid Milwaukee Braves and Brewers fan. She kept statistics of the players and games for many years. Neta also enjoyed watching the WI Badgers Men's Basketball games. She referred to them as Bo's boys.
Neta is survived by her four children, Alan (Victoria) Sheldon of Madison, Janet (Ron) Monahan of Shullsburg, Gail Arling of Cuba City, and Karla Goodney of Platteville, grandchildren Brian (Teri) Sheldon, Jennifer (Jay) Berendes, Brandon (Trina) Popp, Kelly (Josh) Altfillisch, Megan (Dustin) Langsdorf, Matthew Goodney, Jeremy (Kim) Arling, Ryan Arling and Adam Arling, great-grandchildren Jacob Berendes, J.
