Obituary

Morton Ernest “Mort” Stephens, Jr., 71, of Platteville, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at his home. Memorial services will be at Noon, Friday, February 2, 2024 at the Platteville Free Methodist Church, Platteville. Rev. Jeff Suits will officiate. Immediately following the service a meal will be served at the Sonshine Center. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Morton, “Mort” and “Buddy” as family and friends called him was born on April 12, 1952 in Platteville, Wisconsin, son of Morton E. and Vivian (Hill) Stephens, Sr.. He was united in marriage to Danni Almquist on March 28, 1981 in Wyoming, Minnesota. Mort graduated from Platteville High School, class of 1970. He received his bachelors in Theology and Biblical studies from Vennard Bible College, University Park, Iowa. In 1987 he received his Master's in Biblical Counseling from University of Dubuque, Seminary College. He served as a pastor in Birmingham, Iowa for three years until he and Danni moved back to Platteville. Mort for over 30 years worked at Dick's/ Piggly Wiggly, Platteville. He enjoyed studying local history and Civil War history.

Mort is survived by his wife, Danni; four children, Brian (Rachel) Stephens, Matthew (Sheila) Stephens, Senja (Jordan) Hines, and Alec (Allison) Stephens; six grandchildren, Solomon, Silas, and Avery Hines, Tali, Isabelle and Iris Stephens; sister, Stephenie Stephens, brother, Robert “Bob” (Jeanette) Stephens; brother-in-law, Scott (Michele) Almquist and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Robin, four grandchildren in infancy, Nehemiah, Delmy, Deidra, and Mira, his parents and an infant sister, Carolyn.

Dear Danni and Family, We are so sorry to hear of Mort's untimely death. We are very sorry, but we won't be able to attend the memorial for Mort. Our hearts go out to you, Danni, and the family. We will keep all of you in our prayers as you go through this very difficult trial. We will always remember Mort as a very good friend. We spent many happy times together in high school. The Fridays and Saturday night get-togethers will always be in our hearts. Mort was always doing things for others, and he will surely be missed. Larry & Pam

I'm so sorry for your loss. I knew Mort from PHS. He was in band with me. Mort played the saxophone. Stephanie played the flute and piccolo, if my memory serves me. He was a good person and did well in school. He graduated a year before I did. May he be with God and God Bless his family.
