Obituary

Linda R. Young, died in her sleep at her daughter's home, surrounded by her loved ones. It was Martin Luther King Day. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020, starting at 10:00 am at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Platteville, followed at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) by Celebration of Life services at the church. Family and friends are then invited across the street to Steve's Pizza for food, drink, storytelling, laughs, and a few tears if necessary. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested. Linda was a strong supporter of Planned Parenthood, the Platteville Community Arboretum, and Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums, but would have appreciated contributions to many worthwhile non-profits.

Linda was born over 98 years ago to Linda and Roland Rehm in Evanston, Illinois. She graduated from Stanford University where she subsequently earned a master's degree in psychology. Her first job entailed testing and placing children from orphanages all over the state of Iowa. While working for the state of Iowa, she met and married Charles W. Young. After living in Chicago, Sycamore and Carbondale, Illinois, they moved to Wisconsin, first Madison, then Platteville where she lived for 50 years. After raising five children, she returned to the workforce. She loved her job as a school psychologist with Iowa-Grant school district. She was a skilled seamstress, weaver, and quilter.

She was awed by the beauty in nature, whether hiking in the woods filled with Trillium, floating over southern Wisconsin in a hot-air balloon or sea kayaking in the frigid waters of Alaska. Her gentle resilient nature and active healthy lifestyle carried her through. PEO, the Thrift Shop and various church groups were an important part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Bill; her brother, Roland; and her grandson, Lukas and granddaughter, Becky. She is survived by daughters, Susan and Linda; and sons, Tom (Kay) and Chip (Lisa); grandchildren, Sam (Renae), Julia (Justin), Mark, Sarah (Joe), Tyler (Kimberly), Abbie, and Quinn; great-grandchildren, Layna, Isaac, Victoria, Trevyn, and Eloise Joule; and step great-granddaughter, Caitlin.

I always enjoyed working with Linda at Iowa-Grant. She was a kind, patient, and compassionate educator. She always valued the input of the special area teachers while trying to understand a student. How lucky you were to have her for so many years. My sympathy to you all.

I offer my sincere condolences to the entire Young family. Sorry I won't be able to attend the services on Saturday. I would love to see you all. I remember both your parents being very kind and patient especially with their youngest son and his idiot friends! Not really surprised to just now learn of her Stanford education, but it makes me think even more that she knew exactly what was going on when Charlie and I thought we were putting something over on her! I still recall good memories of her every year when holiday eggnog time comes around.

My heart is full of precious memories of Mrs. Linda. She was quick with a smile, kind to all, gentle in spirit, and a great conversationalist. I am honored to have known her and blessed by her friendship. Rest In Peace.
