Obituary

Dennis A. Schaal, 71, Platteville, WI died Wednesday, June 4, 2025. He was born on September 24, 1953, the son of Donald “Dale” and Shirley (Graney) Schaal in Rantoul, IL.  Dennis graduated from Platteville High School in 1972.  He attended Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, graduating in 1974 with an associate's degree in drafting.  Dennis began his career at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works doing drafting, product support and technical writing for 32 years.  He then worked at Almon, Inc. nine years as a technical writer for John Deere. In retirement Dennis worked part-time for Menards.  On April 25, 1997, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Liz” Johnson-Nelson.  Dennis was an avid reader, constantly learning and a ham radio operator.  He enjoyed golf and fishing and was a habitual hobbyist.

Dennis is survived by his wife Liz, children, Brian Schaal, Matt (Jessica) Schaal, Jacob (Zell) Schaal, Aaron (Jessica) Nelson and Paul Nelson, grandchildren, Zoe, Archer, Sterling, Hazel, Maple and Canyon Schaal and Madison Albert Nelson, sister, Kari (Lee) Schaal-Biesinger and brother, Jeff (Laurie) Schaal.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at Noon, Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory in Platteville, WI. Pastor Mary Ann Floerke will officiate.  Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Platteville.   Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home.  Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Denny was always a wonderful customer when I bartended in college in platteville. He was a joy to talk to and get to know better. I played soccer with Jake and Matt as well in high school. My condolences to your family during this difficult time.
