Obituary

Mary Edith Schuler, 83, of Platteville, died on Tuesday October 18, 2016, at Gray's Nursing Home, Platteville.  Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday October 27, 2016, at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where we will also remember her son, Clifton Schuler who died on July 13, 2016.  Rev. Zayna Thompson will officiate.  Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Platteville.  Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday, at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Mary Edith Schuler Memorial Fund.  Online condolences may be made at www.melbyfh.com.

Mary was born on March 6, 1933, in Mt. Ida Township, Wisconsin, the daughter of Claude and Bessie (Cliff) Clifton. She was united in marriage to Neal E. Schuler on June 17, 1953.  He preceded her in death on November 15, 2011.  They were blessed with 58 years of marriage.  Together they farmed in Montfort until 1960, when they then moved to Platteville and farmed there for 40 years.  Mary was a member of Whig United Methodist Church, the Southwest WI Guernsey Breeder's Association where she was a past Treasurer, and the Wisconsin Guernsey Breeder's Association whereas she and Neal received the 2005 Pioneer Breeder Award.  She volunteered her time with the Platteville Blood Mobile.  She enjoyed playing cards, word search puzzles, bowling, water aerobics, trips to the casino, and in earlier years square dancing with the Pistols and Petticoats.  Mary is survived by two children, Eileen (Terry) McCartney and Duane (Laurie) Schuler, both of Platteville; nine grandchildren, Dustin (Katherine) Schuler, Amanda (Hywel) Schuler Wilson, Allen (Renee) McCartney, Jolene McCartney Moeller, Kelly Schuler, Catie (Cam) Schuler Kerkenbush, Casey (Jessica Hewitt) Schuler, Kent (Jesica) Schuler, and Kami Schuler; nine great-grandchildren, Taelor Wilson, Caleb and Colten McCartney, Riley and Cameryn Moeller, Gracey, Laylaa, Maddax, and Ruby Schuler with the tenth arriving in March to join brother Taelor; sister, Ardys (Bob) Bowers of Dubuque, IA; brother, LaVerne (Lois) Clifton of Montfort; sister-in-law, Mary Jean Clifton of Dodgeville; brother-in-law, Allen (Cheryl) Schuler of New Glarus; many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Clifton on July 13, 2016; brother, Clayton and his wife Lois Clifton, sister, Arlene and her husband Bernard Freymiller, brother, Marvin Clifton, and brother and sister-in-law Ben and Donna Riemenapp.

The family would like to thank Nancy Swailes, the staff at Park Place Assisted Living and Memory Care, and Gray's Nursing Home for the professional and compassionate care given over the years.  A special thank you to Dorothy Halferty for her guidance and concern.  Mom couldn't have had a better roommate.
